Frequently Asked Questions
Is a home birth right for me?
As a home birth midwife, I actually don’t think everyone should have their baby at home! It isn’t the right choice for everyone, and having choices is really important. I believe that everyone should have their baby where they feel most comfortable and safe. Lots of people are more comfortable birthing in the hospital and there is no shame in that- it’s our cultural norm! So if you feel good about staying home, that’s number one. We spend a lot of time making sure we are planning a safe home birth- one where the birthing person has gotten prenatal care, we have ruled out conditions that would make hospital birth the safer choice, and we have made a backup plan in case we need it.
Do you take OHP?
We proudly accept OHP! Oregon Health Plan, or Medicaid, is health insurance for low income individuals. OHP covers homebirth for low risk pregnancies. Here are the guidelines they use: https://www.oregon.gov/oha/HPA/DSI-HERC/EvidenceBasedReports/CG-OOHB-2020-Final.pdfamet, Please reach out if you have questions about OHP coverage!
What area do you serve?
I am licensed in Oregon, and I serve clients within approximately 75 minutes of my home in Aloha, Oregon. Generally I serve Washington, Multnomah, and Clackamas counties, but I also travel as far west as the coast, as far east as Mount Hood, and as far south as Salem. Please ask if you have any questions about my service area! I do charge a travel fee for those clients I travel more than an hour to see.
Can I have a homebirth in an apartment?
Apartment, houseboat, RV…. midwives are flexible! We attend you in your home, whatever that looks like.
Do you have an office?
I am proud to be part of the cooperative at Byenveni Baby in Tigard, where I hold weekly clinic. I share that space with experts in lactation, labor support, and childbirth education- reach out for referrals! I also see some clients for prenatal care in their home, as needed and at my discretion. Please get in touch if you’re are looking for in-home care.
What if I’m already seeing an OB?
You can transfer care- people do it all the time. Arnica accepts transfers into care into the third trimester. We will even call your old provider and break up with them for you! If your current provider or birth plan just don’t feel right anymore, reach out today. Even if I’m not the right provider for you I’m happy to offer referrals to help you find the right fit.
